Are You Genetically Built to Be A Vegan?

Dr. Mark Iwanicki May 3, 2021

Your genes don’t dictate your life but they do provide the baseline framework from which your body derives its health set point. Knowing your unique genetic SNP mutations is invaluable for understanding how your body functions most optimally.

There are potentially hundreds of thousands of genetic mutations in any one persons genetic code and we can now screen for these to give us clues as to how your body processes things as specific as digestive enzymes.

Certain individual genetic mutations make it more difficult to process plant-based nutrients compared with animal-based ones. Knowing if you have these can help guide your decisions if you prefer to eat a plant-based diet.

SNP-rs12934922 – Mutation in the Beta Carotene ManoOxygenease enzyme make it difficult to convert plant based Beta Carotene to Retinol, the active form of the fat based vitamin.

SNP-rs1535 – Mutations in the Fatty Acid Desaturace enzyme make it difficult to convert the Omega-3 in Flaxseed oil (ALA) into the Omega-3s you want: EPA and DHA. Vegans with this variant are better off supplementing with an oil made from sea algae.

What is a SNP?

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism

Genetic mutations in your DNA that can alter the effectiveness or certain proteins and enzymes in the body-making them function less efficiently. By understanding you’r unique, individual SNPs you can make better informed health decisions.

SNP-rs2275565 – Mutations in the MTR gene make it difficult to process phosphatidylcholine and therefore require more dietary choline. Choline is primarily found in animal sources, so vegans with this mutation need to supplement more.

With the Curos Health Nutri-Therapy™ report we can screen your raw genetic data and give you an idea of how well you would for example process a plant based diet vs a more meat based diet.

Does having these mutations mean you should not eat plant based? No! But having this information will empower you and allow you to make more informed, healthier choices for yourself.

Every patient gets a free personalized Nutri-Therapy™ health report with all this information and much more. Schedule your first free consultation to see if you are a candidate for our practice.
