4 Most Popular Estrogen Hormone Replacement Therapy Medications for the Symptoms of Menopause

Curos Health Medical Team August 4, 2021

Menopause is an everyday health-related issue, and every female has to go through this phase in her life. It is the stoppage of your periods. It happens mainly after 45 when your ovaries stop producing hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. In general, you will be declared menopaused if you have had no periods for more than a year. When there are no hormones, you will suffer from deficiency symptoms. These symptoms include chills, vaginal dryness, mood swings, night sweats, obesity, and sleep disturbance. To overcome such symptoms, you are recommended to have hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Estrogen HRT medications are widely used to manage the symptoms of menopause. These medications are available in different forms. Currently, the four popular forms of estrogen HRT medications are as follow:

  1. Oral estrogen
  2. Estrogen patches
  3. Topical estrogen forms
  4. Vaginal estrogen forms

The fact behind which medication form is suitable for you depends upon your health status and menopausal symptoms.

Oral estrogen

Oral estrogen is available in the form of pills and the most common estrogen HRT medication. It is taken as a single dose per day without food. It not only resolves the symptoms of menopause but also reduces the risk of osteoporosis.

Common brand names:

Premarin (conjugated estrogen) and Estrace (estradiol)  are some common brand names under which you can get estrogen pills.

Estrogen patches:

Patches are another form of estrogen HRT medication available for you. Usually, it is advised to wear the patch over your abdomen below the waistline. You have to change it once or twice a week. It also helps you to get rid of menopausal symptoms along with reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Its one benefit over pill form is that you haven’t to take it daily. Low-dose estrogen patches are also available, but they are only effective against the treatment of osteoporosis.

Common brand names:

Climara (estradiol), Alora, and Vivelle are some common brand names of estrogen patches available. Menostar is a low-dose estrogen patch.

Topical estrogen form:

These are available in the form of gels, creams, and sprays. All these are also absorbed from the skin into your blood vessels like patches. They are applied once daily, but their site of application varies. Gels are applied from wrist to shoulder of an arm; cream forms on the legs and sprays on the arms. They are absorbed directly into the blood and are effective for you if you are suffering from liver and cholesterol problems.

Common brand names:

Estrogel and Divigell (gels), Estrosorb (cream), and Evamist (spray) are some commonly available topical estrogen forms.

Vaginal estrogen forms:

These are available in the form of rings, vaginal tablets, and creams. Vaginal tablets are placed in the vagina daily and then twice a week after that. Rings are placed in the vagina for three months. Vaginal creams are applied daily. Suppose you are suffering from vaginal symptoms of menopause such as dryness, burning sensation, itching, and pain during sex. In that case, vaginal estrogen forms are best for you.

Common brand names:

Vagifem (tablet), Estring and Femring (insertable rings), and Estrace (cream) are brand names of some available forms of vaginal estrogen.
