Progesterone Hormone Replacement Therapy Medications for Symptoms of Menopause

Curos Health Medical Team August 4, 2021

Menopause is a state that comes in the life of every female after 45. It occurs when her ovaries stop producing eggs, and there are no further monthly periods after that. It is all due to no hormone production from the ovaries essential for females’ sexual life. Different symptoms appear in the absence of these hormones, such as changes in bone density, vaginal dryness, flushes, migraine, chills, obesity, mood changes etc., and these are termed menopausal symptoms.

Hormone replacement therapy is an effective treatment to control these symptoms. If a woman’s uterus is present in the her body, progesterone HRT medications can also be used along with estrogen to maintain hormone health.

Following are the different benefits that you will get while combining progesterone with estrogen in HRT.

Reduces hot flushes and episodes of night sweats:

It has been proven through research studies that the addition of progesterone in HRT has reduced the episodes and intensities of hot flushes and night sweats.

Menopausal sleep-related problems:

Progesterone has also been proven helpful in decreasing sleep-related issues associated with menopause.

There are different forms of progesterone that are used as progesterone HRT medications. These include micronised progesterone, medroxyprogesterone, dydrogesterone, norethisterone, levonorgestrel, and norgestrel. The most important form, beneficial for humans, is micronised progesterone because it is similar to human natural progesterone. Following are different progesterone HRT medications.

Progesterone capsules:

They contain 100,200 or 400mg micronised progesterone per capsule. These capsules are taken orally at night. You can take capsules to prevent endometrial hyperplasia along with estrogen HRT.  The incidences of sleep-related problems are also reduced when you use progesterone along with estrogen after menopause. In addition, it is also used to treat hot flushes and night sweats.

Brand name:

It comes under the Prometrium brand.

Vaginal medications:

These include vaginal gels. The gel contains 4% or 8% micronised progesterone. It is applied to the vagina daily at night, from where it is absorbed into circulation. These are used to decrease the thickening of the endometrium when a female is taking estrogen therapy.

Brand name:

The vaginal gel comes as Crinone, and the vaginal inserts as Endometrin.

Intramuscular injections:

These solutions forms are available as 5 to 50mg doses in solution forms. These are injected intramuscularly used to prevent endometrial hyperplasia.

Brand name:

It comes as Progesterone intramuscular Inj. Sol. in the market.

All these medications are only used when your uterus is intact. If your uterus has been removed due to any reason, then you can use estrogen HRT alone.
