Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth or SIBO is a condition that has received a lot of attention in the functional medicine community. While at school, although we learned about it extensively, I never really thought it was that big of an issue. In private practice however I see so many patients where SIBO is an underlying root cause of many their gut symptoms.
What Are the Symptoms Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth SIBO?
- Abdominal Pain
- IBS-D or C
- Skin Disorders
In a 2017 study published in the journal of gut health up to 78% of people suffering from diagnosed IBS were found to have underlying SIBO.
There are many ways and approaches to treating SIBO. I take a very personalized approach to each patient and develop individualized treatment programs tailored to each unique patient.
SIBO can be notoriously difficult to treat but with the proper holistic, integrative approach healing of the gut can be achieved.
What are Treatments for SIBO?
- GI Targeted Antibiotics
- Rifaximin 550mg TID for 14 days
- Neomycin 500mg BID for 14 days
- Flagyl 550mg TID for 14 days
- Herbals and Prokinetics
- Resolar 1-2mg per day
- LDN 4.5mg per day
- Diet, Detox, Drainage, Isopathy
- SCD Diet
- Elemental Diet
- Pekana remedies
- Nestmann remedies
- San Pharma
- SCD Compliant Probiotics
A good SIBO diagnosis can be made with a GI map or Breath test. What I have found is that of the time low level H. Pylori is to blame. H. Pylori causes low stomach acid which allows the gut bugs to over grow. Treating the H pylori can many times clear up the SIBO.
